Łutsel K’e Students Paint Northern Mural with Artist John Rombough

ŁUTSEL K'E, NT – For the second year in a row,

Łutsel K’e Dene School students partnered with Chipewyan Dene artist John Rombough to create beautiful murals for their school.

The northern lights themed murals, painted on two 8’ x 4’ pieces of plywood, were the creation of the school’s 70 students and Rombough. The artist designed the outline in black paint, while students from Grades 1-12 took turns filling in the colouring over the first two weeks of December.

Rombough said that the students choose winter scenes representative of their area – wolves, and a mother and her children playing in the snow – to paint underneath of the northern lights and glow in the dark stars.

“There is a lot of talent [at Lutsel K’e Dene School],” Rombough said. “It’s good to be involved and to help out.” He added that there was a very positive atmosphere in the creative art class.

“All of the students were eager to be a part of this project, and to learn about their culture from a local artist,” noted Principal Devin Roberts. He explained that the mural painting is part of the school’s wellness initiative, and thanked the Ministry of Education, Culture and Employment and Dominion Diamond Corporation for their financial support.

The murals will act as a backdrop for the school’s holiday concert before being affixed in the school.
